The Mt. Gox Connection

Why XRP Ledger co-creator Jed McCaleb's name comes up in connection with Mt. Gox, and what he actually did and didn't have to do with its collapse.

A piece of crypto trivia that surprises many people: Jed McCaleb, one of the three co-creators of the XRP Ledger, also created Mt. Gox — the exchange that would later become infamous for one of the largest hacks in crypto history. Understanding the actual timeline matters, because it's frequently misrepresented.

What McCaleb actually created

In 2010, McCaleb launched Mt. Gox (an acronym for "Magic: The Gathering Online eXchange," reflecting its origins as a trading site for the Magic: The Gathering card game before McCaleb repurposed the domain for Bitcoin trading). Under his ownership, it briefly became one of the earliest and, at the time, largest Bitcoin exchanges.

McCaleb sold it well before the collapse

In 2011, McCaleb sold Mt. Gox to Mark Karpelès, a French developer, and had no further ownership or operational role in the exchange from that point forward. This is the critical fact: McCaleb was not involved in running Mt. Gox by the time of its eventual collapse.

The 2014 collapse happened under different ownership

Mt. Gox's catastrophic 2014 collapse — triggered by the loss of roughly 850,000 Bitcoin (a mix of customer and company funds) to hacking and, separately, mismanagement — happened under Karpelès's ownership, three years after McCaleb had sold the exchange and moved on to other projects, including co-creating the XRP Ledger in 2011–2012 (overlapping with, and then following, his departure from Mt. Gox).

Why this connection still gets raised

Critics of XRP have, at times, invoked the Mt. Gox connection as a way of casting doubt on McCaleb's judgment or trustworthiness — but doing so requires eliding the fact that he had sold the company and been gone for three years before the events that made it infamous. It is factually accurate that McCaleb founded Mt. Gox; it is not accurate to attribute the 2014 collapse to him personally.

What actually connects to XRP

The genuine, direct connection is simpler and less sensational than the Mt. Gox trivia suggests: McCaleb co-created the XRP Ledger in 2011–2012, alongside David Schwartz and Arthur Britto, before later leaving Ripple in 2014 to found Stellar — a separate, well-documented history covered in Origins and Founding and Timeline of Major Events.
